Get Out of The Gym: 9 Fun Outdoor Activities

Fitness

Now that the weather is improving, why not enjoy that sunshine and fresh air? Being cooped up in the gym all winter may have left you feeling burned out and uninspired when it comes to your workouts, but the weather can help you break out of your rut. Outdoor exercise and play can also push you harder and leave you feeling even better.

9 Fun Outdoor Activities

1. Biking

There are so many ways to get out and pedal. A slow family bike ride with beach cruisers, trikes, and bike trailers of little kids can be a great way to get cardio and resistance training while also logging some quality family time. If you’re more competitive, then actual cycling could be a great option. Or if you love the outdoors then consider trail biking!

2. Tennis

Tennis is a great lifelong sport to pick up. You don’t need formal coaching or expertise to begin playing tennis, and a racquet and balls are a pretty cheap investment. Check out the free courts in parks in your town and begin playing with family or friends for a great, fun workout.

3. Hiking & Nature Walks

Hiking might sound a little bit too intense if you’re not in great shape or you have young kids, but a nature walk might be more your speed. Pick a short, flat trail somewhere in your living area, or even just go to a park or open area. Just taking some time to walk outside can be a workout or rest day, depending on your fitness level.

4. Swimming

We don’t even mean swimming Olympic competitive laps! Just swimming with your kids and friends in a casual public pool can be an excellent workout and a fun way to move.

5. Track Train

Try taking your workout to a local high school track or community center.  These locations can add an entirely new element to your cardio training. Run sprints and shoot for a personal best, or take a few laps up and down bleachers like you’re in football 2-a-days again.

6. Playground

Did you know the playground can be your very own CrossFit gym? Take your kids and spend some time climbing ladders, navigating monkey bars, doing pull-ups and pumping on the swings. You’ll be surprised at how much fun – and weight training – you can have.

7. Water Sports

From kayaking and paddleboarding to waterskiing and tubing, water sports are incredibly fun and athletic. You can create incredible memories while also working your core out there on the water

8. Yoga

Yoga in nature is such an enhanced experience compared to a studio or gym. You get to truly connect with nature using all of your senses, and it can be amazing. Start in your backyard or find a Yoga in the Park program or class to try.

9. Yardwork

Have you ever had sore muscles a day after weeding? That’s because yard work can be more cardio than your gym session. Plus it brings you the benefits of a more beautiful yard and satisfaction in a job well done.

Get outside this spring and summer and tell your gym to take a breather. You’re getting a good workout and a tan while you’re at it.
